"My motivation comes from people. I believe that in life there has to be a greater motivation than just notoriety or compensation. That motivation has to be driven by love or something that is bigger than yourself. For me that is people. I love so deeply which is what drives my empathy for people and desire to help people that can’t see a path forward. My motivation comes from knowing how amazing I am at connecting with others. Knowing that they trust me and if I stop today or decide not to show up tomorrow then something will stop"
"If you want to get started you need to know the industry inside out. You don’t necessarily have to have a degree in design, but should be familiar with the industry standards, terms and history of the design industry. And of course, you need an eye for space, colour, texture and a passion to bring it all together. Another aspect is to have your own unique style, that you can be associated with"
"Figure out the issues that interest you and learn as much as possible. When you’re well informed, get your voice out into the world on those issues, we need your unique perspective! Write, speak, blog, tweet, whatever it takes to get your voice out into the world"
"My favorite thing about my job is the people I work with and help. They have shown me over and over again that this mission is bigger than myself. I am 100% happy with everything I’ve been able to accomplish and happy that I’ve been able to be a source of inspiration to others. This keeps me going when things get rough"
You can have any background and work in this field. Math, physics, computer science, social science, anthropology, history. In fact we are in dire need of people from different backgrounds and perspectives. I'm currently collaborating with a history student. Don't let people intimidate you. Try to see how you can apply your expertise to the field, or if you want to learn, start from some coursera classes, or some of the classes offered at e.g. Sanford (like CS231n) where all the material is online. fast.ai has a great program and resources. Try to work on a personal project and have a study group. And don't be afraid to start from scratch.
"Focusing on your why will lead you to breakthrough moments in your career. You can only impart through seemingly daunting barriers if you stay true to your purpose"
"My biggest advice is stay motivated and stay creative with how you pursue your goals. It is so easy to get off track or get tired of what can seem like an endless battle uphill against so many factors that are out of our control. But if you have a dream, create a mantra so that you can repeat to yourself the reasons why you are pursuing your this dream, especially when you are close to walking away. More than anything, remember that the landscape is changing and if you have an idea and the work ethic to make things come in to fruition, you can create your own reality. My career is a direct testament to that"
"Go for it!! It is hard, you have to put in work and don’t expect handouts from anyone. They say it takes 10 years to be an ‘overnight success’. I have been a full time entrepreneur for 18 years and I have been working on my latest companies for 7- 8 years before we started to gain some real traction. Granted, what I am building is extremely difficult, but nothing comes easy in life. Just have fun with it and be coachable and open to learn"
